Walnut Applesauce Cake is a delicious spiced cake perfect for Autumn and Winter baking. This vintage recipe from 1925 makes walnuts the star of this dense, moist cake with fragrant clove, nutmeg, and cinnamon.
Ingredients
- 1 cup Sugar
- ¼ cup Shortening
- ½ tsp Ground Clove
- ½ tsp Ground Nutmeg
- 1 tsp Cinnamon
- 1 tsp Baking Soda
- 1 Tbsp Hot Water
- 1 cup Applesauce (unsweetened)
- 2 cups Flour
- ½ cup Raisins
- ½ cup Chopped Walnuts
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°. Grease a 9" cake pan and set aside.
- Cream sugar and shortening together until smooth. Add spices and stir until incorporated.
- Combine baking soda and hot water in a small dish. Stir until completely dissolved.
- Stir baking soda mix into apple sauce, then mix in sugar and shortening mix.
- Slowly add flour until fully incorporated. Stir in walnuts and raisins (optional).
- Pour into the prepared cake pan and bake in preheated oven for 45-50 minutes.
